Fourth Grade Curriculum
Reading/Language arts
For comprehension, fourth graders learn to identify and write about the characters, setting, plot, main idea and supporting details of a story. They learn about sequential order, fact and opinion, cause and effect, author’s purpose, inferences, and comparing and contrasting story elements. students develop their vocabulary by learning synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, idioms prefixes and suffixes. Gramar lessons focus on parts of speech, similes and metaphors, punctuation, double negatives, and spelling rules.Students will learn to respond and comprehend a variety of literature including fiction, nonfiction, biography, poetry, and folklore. Students will learn to communicate ideas and information through creative writing.
Math
The Math challenges in fourth grade include critical thinking/problem solving, double-digit multiplication, division, double-digit division, decimals, geometry, algebra, metric and customary measurements, fractions and probability.
Religion
In Religion we focus on Ten Commandments, Lord's Prayer, Beatitudes, Works of Mercy, Liturgical Year, and important feasts we celebrate in the Church. Students will study theme related Bible stories, Bible verses, and lives of saints.
Social Studies
In Social Studies we focus on different regions of the United States, U.S government, and the basic concepts in economics. Students will do research work, reports and power point presentations.
Science
For Science students will study Life Science, Earth Science and Physical Science through hands on activities and experiments. We will investigate the reasons for different shapes of land-forms, life functions of plants and animals, properties of matter, magnets, electricity, and the weather/climate.
Arts
We cover basic concepts in Art curriculum and do projects based on curriculum, Seasons and holidays. Through the "Picturing America" program students have a chance to learn about famous American artists and their artworks. Students learn and practice Music to prepare for live participation at Mass and better performances in Christmas and Spring Concerts.
